There are several federal
roads in Kirikiri town. The link bridge, the Dillion street road, the road
leading to Navy town which passes through the Nigerian Prison Service and Training
College barracks, and the road that links to all of these roads. This road in
question has been without a known designation since its inception,
but today it
is now named Kirikiri town family way. Thank you.
The Kirikiri town family
way rehabilitation began about 7 am this morning by the Federal Road
Maintenance Agency (FERMA). This is a continuation of their unfinished job couple of weeks ago. In our previous update ‘FERMA AT WORK’ which was update on the 8th of October 2013, the
road was smothered but there a lane was apportioned for pedestrian and
vehicular movement, but this time there was a comprehensive barricade - a line
of defense.
The barricade stared some
meters after descending from the link bridge that connects Kirikiri town to the
other parts of Lagos state. The exact point was the once beautiful Kirikiri
garden – this place is where a monument was set up and a garden built to
signify the essence and welcome everyone into Kirikiri town – and ended at the
bustop, in front of the police station. A caution tape tied to a short standing
signpost with this inscription “SLOW DOWN MEN AT WORK” was seen all over the
place. It was used for the siege.
Many individuals were on
site to monitor the labor being done by FERMA. It was as if Julius Berger
Construction Company is the contractor. Heavy stones were excavated and pulled
out of the ground. Stones weighing about 3 tons each were kept beside the road
while the others were yet to be pulled out but had already been burrowed.
There are two gutter
channels on the two edges of the Kirikiri town family way, underneath is a
connecting channel that links them both and channels the waste coming from
parts of Cardoso street, Agunbiade street, airport road, Prison barracks and
Akere street to the Kirikiri canal.
FERMA, with their superb
construction knack were able to detect that if the road is not dredged and that
drainage channel isn't reconstructed, there will be a constant drainage
overflow during the rainy season as witnessed before.
There were so many people
on ground to ensure that there was a smooth operation. While the Site engineers
were busy mapping out their strategies, the police men divided themselves into
groups, one was checking for outdated particulars, one was controlling traffic
at the streets and at the bridge, the other was at the station keeping duty and
some were seated in their van at strategic points. As this was going on, the
men of the Nigerian Navy were as usual positioned at the link bridge to control
the truck drivers who claim to be kings of the road, also the men of the Nigerian
Prison never abandon their big gate where they check every car going in and out
of the barracks, finally the residents of Kirikiri town were also watching and
learning how to construct a road as other business men and women were busy with
their precious trade.
Immediately after lifting
up the stones from the ground, there was a puzzle to solve, there was a little hitch
to tackle, and there was some brainstorming to execute. As a result of this, everyone
came together to form one in unison for solution dialogue.
First there was no notice
of the road closure; secondly, the road has been divided in a way that there is
a big stretched horizontal hole on the road. The stones remaining might be too
heavy for the machine to pull out for it has been deeply rooted and if not
removed carefully might damage the gutter; materials are still being expected
as only a tipper of granite was seen at site this morning. These are issues of
concern that needs consideration that will definitely lead to a progressive
understanding for work to begin.
“Not even a notice”? A
resident complained. “I should have stayed back at home” Said another resident.
Several other residents didn't complain much because this project needs maximum
attention.
What about the prisoners
that went for trials, the Generals of the Navy and residents that went to work
this morning, tourists and workers visiting Kirikiri town?
Due to the closure of Kirikiri
town family way, diversions have been created. The Keke Marwa - tricycle- Park
has moved to the Okoduwa Street junction. Pedestrians are advised go through
the Prison barracks in order to connect the temporary Keke park. Vehicles
coming from comfort oboh street, Mazamaza and the Kirikiri industrial
estate(south east of Kirikiri town) and headed towards the link bridge,
Kirikiri bustop or Mosheshe industrial estate(north of Kirikiri town) must use
the exit way to the link bridge, then turn right and head towards Nigerian Ports
Authority (lighter berth terminal), then turn right into Airport road. SOT
filing station is by the entrance.
Those coming from any other
street must connect Airport road or Akere street which will eventually connect
the link bridge.
Despite the fact that there
was no starting notice, there must be a reopening notice, for, at that time
happiness will fill the hearts of many when Kirikiri town family way is
completed.
Our motto still remains... Upgrading
Standards.
