MIGRANT CRISIS: NEIGHBOURS SQUABBLE AFTER CROATIA U-TURN


Waves of migrants seeking to enter the EU from the south-east have been shunted from one border to another as governments disagree over the crisis.


Croatia reversed its open-door policy after 17,000 arrivals since Wednesday. It is now sending thousands of migrants north, angering Slovenia and Hungary.

CHINESE SHIP CAPSIZE ON YANGTZE RIVER


China's transport minister says rescuers are in a "race against time" to find survivors among the hundreds missing after a cruise ship capsized in bad weather on the Yangtze River.

Thousands of rescuers worked through the night around the upturned hull of the Eastern Star in Hubei province.

FORMER EGYPTIAN PRESIDENT SENTENCED TO DEATH

An Egyptian court has sentenced ousted president Mohammed Morsi to death over a mass prison break in 2011, the BBC reports.

The former leader has already been sentenced to 20 years in jail for ordering the arrest and torture of protesters during his time in power.

15 DEAD IN SIBERIA WILD FIRE

Wildfires have killed at least 15 people and injured about 400 in the Khakassia region of southern Siberia, Russian media report.
Officials say the fires, fuelled by high winds and dry weather, destroyed 1,200 houses in 30 towns and villages.

CHINA STOPS SHENZEN'S RESIDENTS MULTIPLE VISA

China is to stop issuing multiple entry Hong Kong visas to residents of Shenzhen, state media reports.
The move is an attempt by Beijing to ease growing anger in Hong Kong over shopping trips by mainlanders who are take advantage of lower taxes.
Shenzhen residents will now only be able to enter Hong Kong once per week, and stay for no longer than a week.

SPEEDING TRAIN IN INDIA DERAILS - KILLING 30 PEOPLE


A passenger train has derailed in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, killing at least 30 people, a railway spokesman told the BBC.
The engine and two carriages of the Janta Express, which travels between Dehradun and Varanasi, went off the rails near Bachhrawan village.

MILITANTS ATTACK POLICE STATION IN INDIA

Militants attacked a police station in Indian-administered Kashmir, killing three people in the first major attack since a new coalition government took over power in the state this month.
The two attackers were killed after a gun battle that lasted four hours, officials said.
Nine others, including a senior police official, were injured in the attack.

AL-SHABAB LEADER, ADAN GARAR KILLED

The US defence department has confirmed that it has killed an al-Shabab leader, Adan Garar. The Pentagon says the militant was hit by a drone equipped with Hellfire missiles in southern Somalia last Friday.

CHINA AND JAPAN HOLDS SECURITY TALKS AFTER 4 YEARS

China and Japan are holding their first high-level security talks in four years, following recent tensions over territorial and historical issues.

The meeting in Tokyo among officials comes ahead of trilateral talks with South Korea on Saturday.

4 SUSPECTS ARRESTED FOR LINKS TO MUSEUM ATTACK

Four people have been arrested for direct links to Wednesday's gun attack in Tunis that left 23 people dead, including 20 foreign tourists, the Tunisian presidency says.
The army will also be deployed to major cities, the presidency added.

SHINAWATRA (THAI EX-PM) TO STAND TRIAL FOR NEGLIGENCE

Thailand's Supreme Court has ordered the former prime minister to stand trial for negligence over a controversial rice subsidy scheme.
Yingluck Shinawatra is facing a maximum prison sentence of 10 years.
It is the latest blow to the dominance of the Shinawatra family in Thai politics, after Ms Yingluck was banned from politics for five years.

INDIAN MAN TAKES DAUGHTER TO SCHOOL TIED TO A MOTORCYCLE

Police in India have charged a man who took his eight-year-old daughter to school roped to his motorcycle.
The 40-year-old was arrested after local newspapers in Uttar Pradesh state published photos taken by passers-by. He has now been freed on bail.
