BAHRAIN

Bahrain is a British- protected sheikdom. It consists of a group of islands, by the largest of which is also called Bahrain. This group of islands lies in the gulf of Bahrain, between Qatar and Saudi Arabia. The total area of the sheikdom is about 231 square miles. Bahrain Island itself is about 30 miles long and at most, 10
miles wide. Much of the island is desert and most of the sheikdom's 151,000 people live and work in towns. Manama, the capital and largest town, is also an important port. A causeway connects Manama to the island of Muharraq where Bahrain airport is located. Bahrain airport is the busiest airport in the Persian Gulf region.

Bahrain has important oil fields and large oil refineries. In the late 1960's, Bahrain announced that it intended to form a federation with Qatar and the Trucial states in 1971, when Britain planned to withdraw from the area.
