STORY SERIES
…but she quickly recognized
him. Tesa had a gift of knowing people and remembering them very easily. She
now saw Amoda and knew that he was the same man who saved Eta and her some days
before then but she also remembered that he was Eta’s father who had left home
because of her.
“How are you my little
girl?” Amoda asked.
Tesa could not answer. The
change was too much for her.
“Answer now Tesa,” Adia
said to Tesa.
“I am well” Tesa answered
shyly.
“You are not afraid of me,
are you?” Amoda asked.
Tesa looked at Adia’s face
before she answered.
“No, I am not afraid.”
“Then smile,” Amoda said
touching Tesa’s cheek.
Tesa smiled and held Amoda
with her other hand. Eta too smiled.
“That’s it, that’s my good
girl.” Amoda said. He too was smiling.
Adia was all the time
wandering why Amoda had changed. Even on her way home she was still wondering.
Adia went daily to the
hospital. Each time she went she took Eta and Tesa with her. Each time they
went, they all dressed very well. They looked happy and gay; Amoda had never
seen his wife so well dressed and gay.
Each time she went to the
hospital, Adia took a lot of things with her. She gave Amoda milk, ovaltine,
fruits of different types and even cooked food. Amoda was surprised at all
this. He knew that his wife was kind but he knew also that she was poor. He had
told her on the day he left home that Adia and her four children would die of
hunger.
They had not died. Rather
they had money to buy new dresses and buy many things. He was now very ashamed.
He also wondered how Adia came to have so much money. But he couldn’t ask her.
He knew he had not treated her and the children well. He also knew that Adia
was a good woman. She did not seem to mind the way he had treated her and the
children.
Adia on her part wanted to
tell Amoda how she came to have all that money but she wanted Amoda to tell her
how he happened to be at the place where he saved Tesa and Eta.
One day she made up her
mind to ask him.
“Amoda”, she said. “You
have not told me where you have been all the time. You have not told me also
how you happened to be there to save Tesa and Eta.”
“It is a long story,” he
answered but I cannot tell you while the children are here.”
“Tesa, Eta,” Adia called. “Go
out and play. When I am ready to go home, I’ll call you.”
The girls left Adia settled
on the chair near the head of the bed.
“Give me your hand” Amoda
said. He held Adia’s hand. “Do not ask any question until I finish. Now promise
you won’t.”
“Alright, I promise”
answered Adia.
Amoda began. “Tesa is my
daughter. Jarin was my wife.”…to
be continued on Saturday.
