A
ship cutting company inside the Nigerian ports authority lighter berth
terminal, Kirikiri town today (30th march) burst up in flames with
thick smoke engulfing the atmosphere.
The
Nigerian Port Authority immediately beefed up security and halted every
movement in and out of the port. The fire service team of three oil depots in Kirikiri
town (Swift Oil, Fatgbems Oil and Techno Oil) immediately responded to the
situation an hour before the Lagos state fire service arrived. The NPA fire
service team was also on ground.
One of
the NPA Security Intelligence Officers (name withheld) explained that a strict
instruction was given by the port’s boss not to allow any press man into the
fire scene after the reporter must have been tossed to many other bosses
present at the NPA gate.
“I
am only working on strict orders not to allow any press man into the port and I
cannot also give you the contact of my boss who gave us the order pending when
investigation of the fire have been settled” The SIO said sounding like there
was more to the fire than just an accident.
However,
the SIO claimed he has no idea of what started the fire but a source who works
at the port disclosed that the fire may have started with the careless misuse
of ship cutting equipment tank which would have been averted if the workers
were properly attentive to the signs.
Residents
panicked at the sight of the thick smoke. Others presumed one of the Depot was
on fire as they have always anticipated.
The
fire scene was very close one of the tank farms and absent immediate response
could have caused a bigger disaster.
The fire
service team didn’t waste any time in quenching the fire and there was a light
rainfall too that helped calm the entire community.
The
NPA terminal is located south in the map of Kirikiri town along the Kirikiri
canal.
Investigations
are still ongoing to know the root cause of a the fire at the NPA port.
