AGUNBIADE STREET

STREET COMPREHENSION
Agunbiade Street is located at the south-western part of Kirikiri town. It is a street split by another street at the epicenter thereby making it a Two Way Street which connotes one on the left and the other on the right but they mutually bear a similar name.

Agunbiade Street is thus analyzed to be 390 meters long, not minding the partition. It starts at the intersection with Karimu Street and ends at the fence of the Nigerian Ports Authority’s terminal.

This street however, is known for its refusal to denounce its cultural heritage despite all development manifestations. It still upholds the culture of the Awori people who are the original indigents of Kirikiri town. The ‘Egunu’ as popularly known and called by residents is a colorful masquerade that is being let out only during festivals. This masquerade comes in different sizes but the shape is cylindrical. The tallest reaches a height of 15 meters and the shortest 1 meter and their demonstrations are magical but they do not disappear and reappear - don’t be scared. It is like a deity.

Many village houses of indigenous Awori’s are still in existence on Agunbiade Street. Surprisingly enough, the Baale of Kirikiri town, Chief Wasiu Agunbiade 2 lives on Agunbiade Street, he lives there with his family and his palace is also in the hoary bungalow. For your information, the councilor of Kirikiri town also lives on Agunbiade Street making it literally a power chockablock street.

The Local Authority Primary School which is one of the oldest schools in Kirikiri town and the oldest story building opposite the school are all on Agunbiade Street.

Agunbiade has links to Karimu Street, Cardoso Street and Akere Street. A small space located at the end of the streets gives room for youths, and children to play football in the evenings when the sun is about setting.

Due to it’s from way back environment, many of the buildings there are timeworn – sorry to say but they will be upgraded soon.

There are about 47 buildings and 25 business outlets. About 1,290 residents live on Agunbiade Street.
