This city in north central Alabama is
one of the leading industrial centers of the southern United States. With a
population of 297,000, it is the state’s largest city. More than 745,000 people
live in the metropolitan area.
Birmingham is surrounded by land rich
in coal, iron ore and limestone. These resources have made Birmingham the
South’s leading city for the manufacture of steel, as well as machine parts and
other metal goods. The city is often called the ‘Pittsburgh of the South’.
Other industries include textiles, chemicals and furniture. The city is also an
important transportation center.
A notable feature of Birmingham is a
statue of Vulcan, the Roman god of fire and the protector of metalworkers,
which overlooks the city from a nearby mountain. To the south of the city is a
replica of the Roman temple. The city also has large Botanical Gardens, a zoo
and a symphony orchestra. A festival for the arts is held in spring.
More than one third of Birmingham’s
population is black. Civil right demonstrations led to the many disturbances in
the city in the 1960’s. The city was named after Birmingham in central England,
which is a major steel city.
Our motto remains… Upgrading Standards.
