The Baltic is a large sea in Northern Europe. Two narrow straits, the
Kattegat and the Skagerrak, together form a channel linking the Baltic
to the North Sea.
The Baltic Sea covers an area of about 160,000
square miles. It is an important seaway. Finland, Germany, Poland,
Russia and Sweden border the sea. Many of their exports and imports are
carried by ships through the Baltic. The Baltic Sea is almost entirely
enclosed by land.
