It
might be a hard truth to reconcile with when less than half of the 28,885
people who live in Kirikiri town refuse to pay their waste management bill.
This
bill is issued by LAWMA on behalf of the Lagos State Government by virtue of
section 18 of the Lagos Waste Management Authority Law number 27, Vol. 40 Laws
of
Lagos State. Any person who fails or neglects to pay the tariff fees or
charges prescribed by the Lagos Waste Management Authority commits an offence
and is liable on conviction to a fine or imprisonment.
Be it
as it may, residents of Kirikiri town however are not scared of the write up
for the reason that the service rendered is not worthy to be paid for.
“Before
it used to be free but now it is not anymore” said Mrs. Grace from Ilaje Street.
“Do you
use LAWMA services? Asked Kirikiri news.
“I have
never used their service yet they bring their bill for me to pay every month, I
burn the burnable waste and use the services of the ‘kole kole’- Hausa waste
carriers. The bill sent to my flat is currently NGN35000, for what? Who makes
this bill and how do they run it.” said Mrs. Victoria from Johnson Street in an
angry tone as she shows Kirikiri news the bill.
“Whenever
the waste truck arrives, it forces everyone to run along with it to throw our
waste in like we are all footballers on the field of play. Many practice their
throwing skills with their waste. They are too unprofessional. I cannot pay for
such services.” Mrs. Stella from Cardoso Street shares one of her experiences
which made her to stop using their service.
“What annoys me is that the truck never passes
Victor Nwachukwu Close yet, I receive a compulsory bill of NGN1000 every three
weeks. When you go to other towns, they are served right. An attendant will
come to pick it up on a weekly basis. The same LAWMA operates in those towns
too. If we must pay then serve us right” Explains Mr. Kalu from Victor Nwachukwu
Close.
“Every
house in Kirikiri town is in our database and we share the bill every month,
that’s my job” One of the distributors named Chijioke said as he spoke to
Kirikiri news at press time.
All
effort to speak with the Ajwaco boss proved abortive as their phone numbers
weren’t active.
Ajwaco
Nig. Enterprises are in charge of waste management in Kirikiri town, Satellite
town and Alakija and their office is located at 38/40 Cardoso Street, Kirikiri
town.
