BLACK MUSLIM

This is the popular name for members of the Nation of Islam movement in America who have adopted the Islamic religion. The movement grew during the 1950’sand early 1960’s to become one of the most important black nationalist groups the United States.

Black Muslims believe in economic co-operation between black Americans. Many think that black Americans should eventually set up their own independent state. The Black Muslims are organized into temples in many major American cities.

The nation of Islam movement began in Detroit, Michigan, in the early 1930’s under the leadership of Elijah Muhammad. Its religious inspiration came from the Moorish American Science Temple, which was established by the religious reader Noble Ali Drew. Its political inspiration came from black nationalist movement led by the Jamaican Marcus Garvey in the 1920’s. An important Black Muslim of the 1960’s was Malcolm X who was assassinated in 1965 after leading a break away Black Muslim movement. Another leading Black Muslim is Muhammad Ali.

America’s Black Muslims attach great importance to recruiting women, who receive homecraft training as well as political and religious instruction.
