TALES FROM TIMES BEFORE (EPISODE THREE)

STORY SERIES
..If a child ate a rotten food against serious warnings, in the end, he will learn his lessons. I, Eewo, the one who forbids, will make an example of this person who has done what ought not, and should not, be done. Now that I have returned, I will handle the matter as it ought to be handled. You will soon see that when I say that something is forbidden,
it is indeed forbidden!”

Eewo then set off for Akinbo’s farm. He went to the house where his family lived. He gulped down all the water that Akinbo’s mother had fetched and had stored in the water pot, that morning. He slurped all the water left anywhere in the house. Then he went to the farm where Akinbo was hoeing. He drained away all the water there, and even sucked the water in Akinbo’s throat. Akinbo’s throat was so parched that he had to stop work. When he found no water to drink on the farm, he headed for the house.

“Water! Water! Give me water!” he urgently demanded as he entered the house. His mother took a cup and hurried to the water pot. She returned instantly with the empty cup. “It was strange! There is not a drop of water in that water pot! I don’t understand it. If I had not filled it to the brim myself this morning, I would have…

“Never mind that now, send one of your sons to the stream to fetch me water immediately!” Akinbo snapped. His first son was sent to the stream with the gourd to fetch water for his thirsty father.

The boy bent forward, lowered the gourd sideways into the stream to let water flow into it. Eewo, who had preceded him to the stream and had lain under the water, snatched the gourd from his hand and set it adrift. The surprised boy stretched to recover the floating gourd, and even waded into the stream after it. He soon went too far and lost his footing. He tumbled into the stream with a splash. Eewo held him down in that stream until he drowned and he kept the boy’s body there.

When the first child did not return, the second son was sent after him to hurry him up, or to bring water in the gourd. This second son did not find his brother at the stream when he got there, but he saw the gourd floating on it. Because of the urgency with which he had been dispatched, he quickly entered the stream to recover the gourd floating and fetch water for his irate father. Eewo waited for him to wade further into the stream before dealing with him in the same manner that he had dealt with his older brother. His body too was held under the water.

The parents waited impatiently for either boy to return from the stream.

“Wo! You. Come here!” and the third boy quickly responded to his father’s call. “Before I shut and open my eyes again, I want you out of here and back with that gourd of water. Do you hear me! Thundered Akinbo

The third boy ran all the way to the stream. He… To be continued on Thursday.
