BLACK PANTHERS

These are members of the Black Panther Party, a ‘black power’ movement that grew up in America in the late 1960’s. The panthers believe that black Americans are a ‘colony’. They claim that they are oppressed by America’s ruling class in the same way African
peoples were dominated by Europeans. Their revolutionary beliefs, and the fact that they were often armed, caused many clashes with the police. Several leading Panthers, as well as policemen, were killed or wounded in police raids. Others were jailed or went into hiding abroad. In spite of this, the panthers built up chapters (branches) in more than 30 American cities. They began programs to help the poorer people of the black community. These included free breakfasts for schoolchildren and free clinics.

The black panthers were founded in Oakland, California, in 1966. There, groups of young blacks were organized to ‘shadow’ police patrols. Noted Panther leaders include Huey P. Newton, Bobby Seale, and Leroy Eldridge Cleaver.
