In the early hours of
yesterday (13/04/2014) a heavy downpour accompanied with constant earth-shaking
rumbling thunder, ground-striking lightning and turbulent wind rocked many
parts of Lagos state.
In Mazamaza area (Amuwo Odofin
LGA) the roof of a house was reported to have been uprooted by
the raging wind
and deposited on the road. Similar reports from Kirikiri town (Oriade LGCDA)
has it also that the same wind removed the roof of a building at Cardoso street
and rendered the occupants temporarily homeless, severed a tree from its root
which fell on a house, detached the lateral aluminum draping of another house
at Johnson street which shattered the windscreen of a parked car that was for
sale.
Many more reports such as television
antennae and satellite dishes were displaced by the wind, the street light
beside the Traditional rulers’ (Baale) house fell on a house which wedged it from
falling to the ground, electric poles were few meters above ground level with the
high tension wires lingering, so many flooded houses and streets, people were
seen scooping water from their houses and their many properties soaked with
water.
This rain storm lasted for
about one hour and forty minutes,
“This was no ordinary rain
my brother, I was already prepared to go to church but I couldn’t because of
the rain. I thought the world was about to end.” A man talking to Kirikiri news
expressed as his house was not left out in the damage.
Great deals of damages have
been recorded.
Many houses in the state
have stood the taste of time and can stand no more. Property owners should know
when their properties are due for Maintenance. People are advised to prepare
for the rainy days. Disasters like this could happen at any time especially
this period of the rainy season in tropical areas of the world.
