“DO NOT PASS THIS ROAD
AFTER 12:00 MIDNIGHT, IF YOU DO, IT’S AT YOUR OWN RISK” This bloodcurdling
notice written five times at 10 meters interval from the beginning to the end
of Igunnu lane has succeeded in
paralyzing the minds of residents and making them fear that their lives were in
danger at the hands of ritual killers.
The notice which was treated
as a bomb scare among residents left them pointing fingers at the Egunu house
that displays masquerade and shares its fence with the lane. Residents however,
thought of the notice to be some sort of legal alertness to the activities of
ritual killers and this actually threw the lane and its surrounding streets –
Airport Road and Akere Street – in a total state of desolation after midnight.
Kirikiri news gathered that
the notice was put up on the walls of the street last year in order to curb
sexual and burglar activities.
“This notice was written
last year because the rate at which some romance activities occur during
midnight was appalling and some house burglars tear the net of residents on our
lane to pick up their belongings. Ever since this year we haven’t experienced
any of these activities.” a resident on Igunnu lane said
When Kirikiri news spoke to
an elder of the Egunu group who claimed anonymity, he stated that such act is
barbaric and they have never indulged in such.
“This is preposterous, how
could residents think that we wrote the notice in the first place? And even for
such a purpose? We are not ritual killers and we do not kill people, we only
display those masquerades for traditional purposes. ” he concluded.
Igunnu lane is an eight
meter wide lane that links Akere Street to Cardoso Street.
