RETURN OF UMUNEDE

Construction have commenced on the former site of the demolished 'Umunede'. Umunede as fondly called and known by both residents and visitors of Kirikiri town was finally demolished last month. Shop owners were given forehand notice. Many complied and those who didn't were visited with heavy caterpillars

immediately they opened their shops. They ran helter skelter looking for how to evacuate their belongings at the last minute.

Umunede used to be a 'chilling' and relaxation site for the boys and men. The ladies love that place as it was fun to be there because they know that they will enjoy the good things of life. Nkowbi, fresh fish pepper soup (point and kill), goat meat pepper soup, chicken pepper soup, Ugba, assorted beer and all kinds of drinks were the various delicacies sold and served. Over 30 shops were thriving and business was indeed bubbling. It was the hottest place in Kirikiri town. It was also located at the south entrance of Kirikiri town, immediately you descend the link bridge. People trooped in from neighboring towns to catch fun daily.

The Nigerian Prison Service decided to restructure the entire prison barracks due to threats from boko haram sect. Umunede was affected. It was totally demolished along with all shops surrounding the barracks. Fences will be put up in order to distinguish the barracks from the town.

Our Sources speculate that the Prison Authorities have commenced the building of a mall. Although a proposed plan wasn't sighted but according to the foundation structure already laid, it might just be obvious that there will be a wide and better structure on that site. The workers are working daily to ensure the job is completed and The Nigerian Prison Service Authorities shouldn't make this project an abandoned one.

Some residents complain that Umunede has made our youths; male children become drunks and their daughters run after men because of the various delight the place offers. Some other residents say that many of their children work hard every day just to spend all their money and savings at Umunede.

To those who want the return of Umunede, a new Umunede will be built, but in a classy way, or may never return.
