STORY SERIES
… I did not believe her. She
said her mother was a beggar. We all know that beggars and their children play
a lot of trick to get money. Also I was in a hurry that day I drove away in a
hurry but I regretted it. In my hurry I ran my car into an upright pole and it
was badly damaged. I had a few cuts
and few bruises myself. My car has been off
the road ever since.”
The nurse drew Tesa to
herself, patted her on her head. “I am sorry, my dear” she said, “I did not
believe you. But you don’t look like a beggar’s daughter. You look like a
princess and I like you very much. Now smile.”
Tesa smiled. They all
laughed. The nurse looked into Adia’s face as if she wanted to ask some
questions. Adia knew what was in the nurse’s mind and shook her head, she
seemed to say that that was not the right time and place to ask such questions.
Adia wondered what a
wonderful girl Tesa was. She had seen the nurse only once yet she remembered it
all. Who knows how many people she would still recognize?
It was not long before she
was proved right. Adia and the children sat by Amoda’s bed in the hospital as
usual during the visiting hour. A male patient left his bed to the other end
and moved from bed to bed talking to other patients. He was very pleasant and
had some kind things to say to each patient. He also spoke cheerfully to the
visitor who stood or sat by the beds. He came to Amoda’s bed. Amoda was sitting
up when his eyes met those of the male patient. They looked at each other for
some time. No one spoke. Then the man said “Amoda, is it really you?”
“Yes, it is me indeed,”
Amoda answered.
“What a place to meet after
many years” said the patient. “How long have you been here?”
“About a month now,”
answered Amoda.
The man moved close to
Amoda. He stood at the other side of the bed facing Adia and the children. He greeted
Adia and the children. Adia answered, Eta answered, but Tesa did not.
“I see that my little
friend there does not want to answer me. Have we quarreled? He asked.
“Take your hand off my daddy
bed. Don’t put any dust on it, Tesa answered.
Adia said quickly. “Tesa
don’t be rude to the gentle man. He is a friend, as you can see.”
“No! He is not a friend,”
Tesa said. “He drove me away because I touched his cloth he said that I was
putting dust on it.”
The man stood still with
surprise. “I don’t know what she is talking about. Have I ever met you?”
Tesa answered sharply, “You
know. You were standing by your big shinnying car with a woman. You drove away
and said that beggars are liars. I was only asking you to help my mother who
was dying”
The man remembered. He
confessed that he drove a little girl away that he did not believe her story.
“Do you know, Amoda, that I
have not entered my house since that day?” he said. “I left that spot and my
driver crashed the car, I had a fracture, the woman too had a fracture. She is
in the female ward. Only the…to be continued on Thursday
