For
so many, the new year started beautifully while for others bitterly.
There
was a disastrous fire outbreak at Dillion Street and Okoduwa Street junction in
Kirikiri town, Lagos state on Thursday 8th January 2015. Though
Dillion Street is a residential area, Okoduwa Street is well known as a
business hub for truck tire and rim spare parts.

An
eye witness testified saying he was 10 meters away from the scene when the fire
started.
“I was
just some distance away from the scene because I parked my bike to sleep on it when
the incident happened at midnight and it started from one of the shops. I don’t
really know but I think It must have been an electrical fault from one of the
shops there and also the way the fire spread there must have been a concealed
oil product somewhere around there which fused with stored tires in one of the
shops” The eye witness testified.

Speculations
have it that the land housing the numerous shops (Provision store, Construction
company office, Mechanical shops, Spare part dealer and Articulated truck tire
shop and others) was actually up for sale before the unfortunate incident.
Contemplating
the root cause of the fire, residents of Kirikiri town in their several
opinions mull over a suspected commencement of hostilities on that land.
The Lagos
State fire service, the police and even the owner of the land haven’t been able
to come up with any reports of the cause of the fire outbreak that damaged
properties and goods although no life was lost.
One of
the dealers of truck tires was reported to have fainted in his home town when
he heard the news of his shop being burnt down completely by the fire.
The one
storey building beside the land was also extremely affected by the inferno but
the aged woman whose children lives abroad consoled her for the loss.
The Kirikiri
town divisional HQ’s DCO was on ground to examine the damage and they are still
investigating so are the Lagos state fire service team and the owner of the
property but their phones weren’t available to be reached for further briefing
as at the time of filing this report.
