Araka was struck dumb. Disgraced by this public exposure, she walked away quietly and took the ladder inside. She leant it against the loft and climbed up to it. Tearfully, she

searched up there until she found her old buffalo skin. It was now dry and dusty. She gently brought it down and cleaned it in water to help it regain its suppleness, and to wash away the dust.

The more Araka thought of her humiliation, the more convinced she was that Olukosi, her husband of over two decades, the father of her nine sons, had betrayed her to his senior wife. Araka was determined to make Olukosi pay for this breach of trust. She did not know whether to wait for him to return from the hunt or to go to the forest to confront him with his treachery. Araka thought the matter over all night, and very early in the morning, she put her reconditioned buffalo skin over her head and started off furiously, on all fours, for the forest. She was going to do battle with the man who had caused her such ignominy.

Olukosi Epe was perched again on the Obobo tree waiting for game to come his way early that morning when he spied a buffalo racing frenziedly in his direction. For no reason that he could explain later, he immediately sensed that it was Araka, and he became apprehensive. When the buffalo charged at the Obobo tree in which he was perched, he was convinced that Araka had come to kill him. Of course, he did not know why she would want to do so, or why she was so enraged.
