horns, and peeled off its bark in huge chunks with her teeth. Recognizing how
very unsafe his perch had become, Olukosi resorted to his many charms and
spells. He recited some incantations before bouncing off the Obobo tree. He
landed running, and was promptly given chase by the buffalo. The race was hot!
Olukosi
wove his way between the trees, breaking the buffalo speed. All the time, of
course, he was mentally riffling through his collections of medicines and
spells to choose the appropriate one. The sudden appearance of a stream ahead
decides his choice but he needed to get to the stream first, and fast too! He
risked it. He ceased his weaving in and out of trees and sped straight ahead.
Of course, the buffalo quickly gained on him, and was about to thrust her horns
into him when Olukosi turned into an Iromi and alighted on the stream.
The
buffalo looked all around and up and down the trees for Olukosi. She ran here,
she ran there, she ran everywhere looking for him. She even searched for him at
the water’s edge. “Where did he go?” she raged, foaming at the mouth. In the
end, because Olukosi was nowhere to be found, the buffalo, stormed out of the
forest. She did not know that he was that breathless Iromi, dancing with the
others, on the surface of the stream.
Araka
decided to return home, she wanted to see her children, her link with Olukosi
and the world of men. When her children saw her approaching the house, even in
her human form, they scattered in different directions. They did not know what
to expect from this woman whom they had now been told was an animal. She called
them each by their names, pleading that she needed to explain things to them.
They came to her because they could see that she was their mother.
“Come
on inside my sons,” she gently invited…To be continued on Tuesday.
