The
moneylender did not have a claim on all the Iwofa’s time, however. The Iwofa
worked for a specific number of hours a day, and so many days a week. The Iwofa
altogether had a least a day in a week free. In the time left to him, the Iwofa
engaged in his own business. For instance, if the moneylender were a farmer,
work on his farm would start at sunrise, that is, around six o’clock in the
morning. It usually ended before noon. Thereafter the Iwofa could be free to go
off to work on his own farm, if he too were a farmer, or to pick cotton, spin
it, or weave cloth.
The
Iwofa was, however, released from the service of the moneylender immediately
the loan, against which he was held as security, was fully repaid. In this
story, it was Esu’s son that was handed over as Iwofa, when Orunmila took a
loan from Olofin.
Orunmila’s
son was dangerously ill and the father knew that he had to consult Ifa to find
out the forces at work in the boys illness and what to do to make him well
again. Although he was himself the oracle orisa, Orunmila was still required to
pay the consultation fee to obtain the guidance and assurance he desired from
the oracle. But, Orunmila had no money with which to do this, or the money with
which to buy the materials for the sacrifice that was sure to be required at
the end of such consultation. After pondering over his predicament, Orunmila went
to his friend, Esu.
