BIRDS OF PREY

Birds of prey are birds that feed on other animals, such as mammals, reptiles, and other birds. They all have powerful feet and talons (claws), and heavy, hooked breaks with which they kill and tear their prey.
That two main groups are the hawks (including eagles and harriers), which hunt mainly by day, and the owls which hunt mainly by night, Hawks have an eye on each side of their heads. Owls have both eyes looking forward which gives them a somewhat human appearance.

Other birds of prey include vultures, which feed on sick and dead animals, and the secretary bird, which kills snakes. The osprey, which eats fish, is also included in this group. Other fish-eaters, such as king fishers and herons, belong to different groups and are not usually to different birds of prey.

Birds of prey are found in all parts of the world. They range in all sizes from some hawks that are no bigger that a starling to gigantic eagles, and the majestic condor, with a 101/2-foot wing span.
