NIGERIA PRISON’S TRIPLE COMMISSIONING – out-and-out upgrade

Today in Kirikiri town, Lagos, authorized vehicles assembled, canopies offered protection from sunlight, armed men watched indomitably, cameras flashed, dignitaries, officers and personnel of various government establishments congregated to celebrate the commissioning of the Co-operative Hall, Lawn Tennis Court and the Prison Staff Club.
The Prison Department Staff Multi-Purpose Co-operative Society Limited Lagos, were behind this commanding landmark achievement.

This event magnetized a host of highly paced people in the Prison Service, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Nigeria Army, Cooperate organizations, Media houses (KIRIKIRI NEWS, NTA and Lagos Radio Station) and respected individuals. Big names such as Zakari Ohiniyo Ibrahim (MFR, mini) Controller General of Prisons, Esu Ubi (FDC) ACG Zonal Coordinator, Zone A, C.N. Ononye, (fsi) Controller of Prisons, Lagos State, Omene P.N (CP) Commandant PTCK, Kirikiri town, Apapa, Lagos, were bodily present while some were represented and some absent. Among others was a representative of Eco bank, Folabi yaya, Lieutenant B.A. Itsagwede (in charge of the Nigerian Army squad attached to the prisons) and many others.

The executive members of this cooperation worked really hard towards the success of this event as the President, Salau S. Lawal was greatly commended for this attainment. Few years ago the building now used for the staff club or (officers mess) as the case may be, was a hall where social gathering’s took place in Kirikiri town. It was used both by the prison staffs and the residents of Kirikiri town. Although the building was in a codswallop state, it was still managed until its recent refurbishment in 2013. The multipurpose hall came gallantly into existence in 2013 complementing the staff club and also to make it classy, a lawn tennis court which existed before but was dormant was utilized and transformed into a standard court. Now, these three institutions operate as one body with a fence formed around them and a main gate. “Welcome to heaven” someone said frivolously.

“What we go to Sokoto to find is right in our shokoto” said the MC of the event who is also a prison officer.

“I remember how it used to look like before and now, giving it a new look of life for the officers and staff of prison, I commend you for you are people with thinking acumen. I congratulate the president of the cooperation. If the leader is not good the followers will follow suit. Many of the staffs have built houses, married wives and even kept girlfriends through the help of this prestigious cooperative” said the controller of prisons, Lagos state
“As the mother of Kirikiri town prison I appeal to everyone to come here and exercise their bodies and also keep fit. I also urge your earnest patronage to see this place grow”, said Omene P.N. (CP), the Commandant of Prison Training College, Kirikiri town.
Mrs C.N Ononye also commended the laudable project saying history has been made today by the cooperation and that Mr. Lawal should be mindful of maintenance and patronage of the place.

Every officer and personnel of the prisons was well dressed for the event. The order of commissioning started with the staff club then it moved to the lawn tennis court and ended at the event center and multi-purpose hall. The order of the day started with the arrival of guests, introduction of guests, opening prayer, National anthem to the president’s speech which was  touching when he said that “In recent year cooperative societies have become not only a socio-economic instrument for the uplifting of individuals general living standard. It also harnesses cooperatives resources to boast member’s morale by providing conducive environment for the performance of their official functions /duties. Also it helps government in the fight to alleviate poverty”.

He added saying that “at the inception of my tenure I intended to build a befitting office and hall complex for the society. I am happy today to say that GOD almighty gave me and my colleagues to the courage to fulfill our electoral promise. The cooperative event center will not only generate revenue but also provide conducive environment for relaxation of prison staff in particular and for all Nigerians in general. The event center is built without remorse to financial institution for credit facilities”.

The Lagos state Ministry of Agriculture, was part of the people who made this dream a reality.

This place is not only meant for the staffs alone but for the general public also. It was commissioned to the glory of God and to the satisfaction of staff and non-staff of the prison service. It was quite hilarious watching the high ranked officers missing shots as the all scrambled to play on the new lawn tennis court because they were so excited. Wines were also popped and gifts (souvenirs) were shared. The vote of thanks gave glory to the Almighty God and the also to the invited guests then the Chief Imam of the prison mosque closed the event with a final prayer.

Our motto remains…Upgrading Standards.
