“Will
this hunt be successful?” that was why Olukosi consulted, the oracle, Ifa. When
the priest cast the pieces of kola, the forecast was propitious, with two
pieces facing down and the other two up. Olukosi was told that the hunt would
be successful. He was warned however about meeting a stranger. A supernatural
stranger. Olukosi was made to make a sacrifice for safety, which he did. Later
he took his hunting bag, his hunting gear and set off for the forest.
Olukosi
was a formidable hunter from Ife Ooye, who always took care to fortify himself
with potent medicines. He had dozens of gourdlets filled with powerful powders
and herbs, scores of magical amulet, with which he cast spells to protect
himself from every Kind of danger, and he had a mother who was a consummate
witch.
A
hunter lies in wait for his prey. As usual, when he reached far into the
forest, Olukosi climbed his favorite Obobo tree and perched there to wait for
the big game. When he sighted any he came down and stalked it until it was
close enough to take a shot at it. Olukosi was never known to miss his shot. He
regularly brought down elephants and lions. However he was particularly
cautious in his hunt.
“What
is that!” Olukosi sat up suddenly and stared ahead of him. “It cannot be!” what
he sighted entering the forest was not an animal at all. It was another human
being! A female human being! “What nature of woman can be walking fearlessly in
the deep forest like this?” he wondered. As he sat there astounded, the woman
moved closer. Indeed she stopped at the foot of the Obobo tree on which Olukosi
was perched. Without looking around or above she removed her head-tie, folded
it neatly and placed it on the ground in front of her. Then she uncovered a
hole by the Obobo tree and produced a buffalo skin with horns. She picked up he
folded headtie and lay it inside the hole and covered it. She then put the
buffalo skin above her head, wriggled into it, turned around and walked away on
all fours.
Olukosi
was stunned at the sight of a strange, fearless woman walking away as…To be
