This is a two- or four-man steel sled used for the sport
of bobsledding. In this sport, teams of two or four people compete to see which
can sled fastest down specially prepared ice slopes. Modern bobsleds consist of
two sections that are joined
together by a steering wheel.
The steering wheel
points the front section in the direction the pilot wants it to go. In two-man
sleds, one steers and the other brakes, using the steel ‘teeth’ that swing down
into the ice. It is necessary to be able to brake, because speeds of up to 90
miles an hour are often reached. In four man sleds, two men sit in the middle
and give added balance. They also lie back and swing their bodies up and down
to give extra push to the sled when needed. This is called bobbing.together by a steering wheel.
Two vacationing Americans are said to have invented
bobsledding in the late 1800’s. The first organized race was held by Britain at
Davos, Switzerland. Bobsledding events were first included in the winter
Olympic Games in 1924, and are now a regular feature.
