BERLIN

Berlin, presently consists of the two parts, West Berlin and East Berlin, is the largest city in Germany. It is also one of the largest cities on the continent with a population more than 3,370,000. It lies in the flat valley of the river Spree, which crosses the city from south-east to north-west. The city is encircled by pine forests and large areas of marsh
and Lakeland. Numerous canals connect it with the Oder and the Elbe rivers. Berlin is a commercial center with large industries in electrical engineering, machinery and metal manufacture, chemical products, textiles, paper, foodstuffs and beer. Up to 1945, Berlin was the capital city, and, centrally situated, a focal point in European communications. Both functions were disrupted by division of Germany following world war 11.

Much restoration work has been carried out since the war, particularly in West Berlin. Fine new roads have been built and many new structures rise to join the old buildings that survived.

Berlin was severely damaged during the Second World War. In some places war damage is still evident, though many new buildings have been constructed, particularly in West Berlin.
