Nigerian Maritime
Administration and Safety (NIMASA) agency is one of the government chattels
situated in Kirikiri town. It has several offices nationwide but its resource
center is in Kirikiri town. It claims about 2 acres of land in Kirikiri town. One
of its buildings happens to be the best structure in Kirikiri town.
It was an
exasperating incident when a resident of Kirikiri town who wanted to broaden
his horizon by reading in the NIMASA library. he decided to visit the library
which he gathered some days ago from his neighbor was a nice and fully equipped
place to read beneficial books.
However, his neighbor
revealed being there once to read, perhaps that was what gave him confidence to
pay a visit to NIMASA complex which comprises of about 8 modern buildings. Many
people often go there to do a lot of activities such as banking, dock services,
and so on.
Whenever you
arrive the complex gate, you will be asked a common question by the security
guards which is “where are you going” the common reply is “ATM” then you will
be allowed access with immediate effect. But the incident that happened was
exasperating for the reason that when the common question was asked at the gate
by the security man, “where are you going” the reply was “I am going to the library”
another question followed “to do what” still wondering why another question
followed but notwithstanding, another reply “ to read” now the security man who
perhaps haven’t heard anyone say any other reply other than ATM was dumbfounded
but still rebuffed to open the gate not until the resident threw a question “what
kind of question is that, why would you ask me what I am going to the library
to do?, you ought to know“ this question infuriated the security man and he
replied, “na your papa build am”.
After much
observation of this incident which finally resulted into some constructive
yelling between the resident and the security man. In a few minutes time the
head of security came to give an ear to the situation but the security man
plainly told his boss that there is no problem and that he can contain the
situation and that the resident will never enter the premises.
This took about
10 minutes to resolve when a NIMASA staff passed by the gate and inquired the
problem. He then asks the resident “are you a staff, the library is not for
public use”. A triumphant smile occupied the face of the security man as he
leaped for joy that the resident did not have his way to read.
Another close
observer said from a distance “na wa for you o, because say him wan read you no
allow am, you want make him be like you? mtcheeww. Make una let all these young
guys read o” my brother no mind them jare”.
It is quite unfortunate
to find out that such a facility is available in Kirikiri town but it is not
accessible to those who need it i.e. and as they would say ‘public’. NIMASA complex
is enormous enough to organize a reading competition to encourage reading in Kirikiri
town. Please make it public soon. Kirikiri town residents can read and we want
to read. This is being said with love.
Our motto remains…Upgrading Standards.
