STORY SERIES
…to their mother. She
gathered them to herself. Later she made them sit down and once more served
them the meal which their father did not eat.
Adia did not talk to them
about their fathers leaving the house. The children did not ask. They were
very
happy in the company of their mother and in the company of one another.
Adia waited for her
husband. She sat up till very far in the night when she could no longer keep
awake, she locked the door and went to sleep. All along she had hoped that her
husband would get over his anger and return home to her and to his children.
She woke up the following
morning still hoping that her husband would come home. She did not go to her
stall in the market. She wanted her husband home very much.
She went to the market in
the afternoon and might return home at six o’clock as usual. She came back from
the market and cooked a very delicious meal. She had the money. She had the
money. She hoped her husband would eat it this time and then they would talk
matters over.
At six o’clock, her husband
did not show up. At seven o’clock he had not come. She got up many times, went
to the door and looked out hoping to see her husband on his way home. But there
was no one like him. At eight o’clock she gave up. She knew then that her husband
meant what he said.
She too meant to keep
little Tesa. She had promised her dying mother. She would therefore not fail to
keep her promise. Also she liked Tesa very much, her own children like her and
they were happy together. If an old man chose to leave home because of a little
dear girl it was just too bad.
Adia and her four children
had another nice dinner and later went happily to bed. Adia was trying not to
think of her husband anymore. She made up her mind to be happy with her
children.
She was getting ready to go
to her stall in the market when someone knocked at the door. She quickly opened
the door. It was her friend Abebi who entered. Adia was happy to see Abebi. She
would not tell many people her trouble but she could trust Abebi.
Adia then began to talk as
soon as Abebi settled down on a chair. She told Abebi all that had happened the
past three days and she did not hide anything.
“Have I done anything wrong
Abebi, have I?” she asked at last when she had finished
“No you haven’t done anything
wrong Adia,” Abebi answered. “I can’t see any reason for your husband running
from the home. Perhaps he has something to hide”
Abebi told her she was
lucky to have so much money or she and the children would have died of hunger.
She therefore asked Adia to make a wise use of the money.
She asked Adia to follow
her to the place where she buys cloths which she sold in her shop.
Adia took some money with
her. Abebi bought a large quantity of cloth. Adia bought a small quantity. A
soon as they came out to the street, some women who were waiting, bought all
the clothes Adia had. She made thirty naira gain that day. Again it was like a
dream.…to be continued on Saturday.
