STORY SERIES
…Had cooked the best meal
she had ever served in the home. When Eta and the others ate their lunch that
day, they felt very happy. Tesa too had never eaten anything like it. She did
not know that it was new to her just as it was new to the other children.
As her husband entered she
met him with a big smile. It was easy for him to know that something new was
happening. The three children came to meet their father. Tesa followed. He
greeted them, and then he saw Tesa. He stood still and silent for a while as if
he had seen a ghost.
“Who is this? He shouted what
does she want I this place? Where does she come from? from hell or from Jupiter?
Answer me this minute or..?”
He was already panting, as
if he had been running and was out of breadth. He looked wild. His eyes were
red with anger. He paused for a minute and began once more.
“I say, where does she come
from? You answer me or something bad will happen now.”
Adia tried to say
something. At first she could not because she was taken by surprise. She had
spent all the afternoon preparing a delicious meal for her husband but here he
was now boiling with anger.
“Sit down and calm down
first,” Adia said. “Then you can eat something. I have prepared a nice dish for
you, something really nice. After that I’ll answer your questions and give you some
news that will gladden your heart.”
“Cut that off,” he shouted.
“I am talking about this little creature and you are talking about food. What meat
have I not eaten? Tell me here and now who this one is and how she comes to be
under my roof. What is she doing here? I tell you she either goes out this very
minute or I’ll go out for her, and stay there till she goes away.”
Adia was now getting angry
too. Her husband was very unreasonable. She had tried not to be angry but now
he had decided to go out if Tesa remained she could bear it no more. She spoke
angrily, “Do you know this little girl? You sound as if you knew her before now.
You won’t even listen. You go on asking one question after another. Who is this
girl? She is a person like you and me and not an animal. If you choose to go
away you can do that right now.”
“If I go away, you’ll all
starve,” he answered back angrily. “Where will you get money to feed yourself,
your three children and this one? You’ll all die of hunger.”
“There you lie,” said Adia.
“It is you who will die of hunger. I mean to keep this little girl in this
house and she’ll stay. You may go if you like. We don’t need you.
The man did not answer
again. He went into his room, packed a leather bag and went out. Adia watched
him go. She knew that she was right and he was wrong.
When it was all quiet, he children
who had run away from their father as he shouted in anger, quietly returned…to
be continued on Thursday.
