Bison are large, horned wild oxen of
North America and Europe. They are often called buffalo, but are quite
different from the buffalo of Asia and Africa. Male bison are bigger than most
domestic cattle, reaching 10 feet in length and weighing up to 2,500 lb. But
the females are much smaller. The European species is slightly longer than the
American. Bison have big shoulders, a humped back, and a shaggy mane. They live
in herds and once roamed most of Europe and North America. But many thousand
were killed by man, and they now live only in zoos and game reserves.
