Four
days after a major fire incident at Dillion Street/ Okoduwa Street, another hell
was let loose in Kirikiri town as a fully stocked ware house belonging to
Henry&Henry limited burst up in uncontrollable flames. The warehouse was
stocked to brim with bicycle tubes and tires, motorcycle tubes and tires, peddler
fitting chromes, machinery parts, and other expensive spare parts items.
The
fire started at about 3:22pm WAT with only a visible smoke and fire alarm
voices were heard inside the warehouse. In few minutes, the smoke turned into a
raging inferno without discipline even after the staff had exhausted their fire
extinguishers all to no avail.
As usual,
there was hasty response from the combined fire service team of Swift Oil
Depot, Techno Oil Depot, Fatgbems Oil Depot, Bovas Oil Depot, Nigerian Port
Authority (NPA) terminal and Lagos state fire service but their effort only
infuriated the fire.
The
entire able bodied men and CDA youth in Kirikiri town assisted the fire
fighters exhibiting several extraordinary stunts such as breaking the walls and
fences, prevention of further spreading to nearby buildings and unified
retrieval of yet to be cremated items all in a bid to contain the fire.
Speaking
with the head of the fire service team Isolo/Oshodi fire station Mr. Olusoya
Taiwo, he said when they received the distress call they responded swiftly. When
they arrived, they radioed Ilupeju fire station for reinforcement.
“When
we received the call, we came immediately to the rescue. We found out that the
fire was immeasurable. We radioed Ilupeju fire station for reinforcement
immediately and the came. We were here with all our full fighting equipment,
chemicals and a 10,000 liter capacity vehicle same as Ilupeju station. We used
Techno Oil Depot as our water replenishing point and we won’t leave here until
the fire has been total extinguished” Mr. Olusoya spoke to Kirikiri News
However,
the actual cause of the fire is still unknown and the police are running
investigations.
A
staff of the company disclosed to Kirikiri News that they were inside the warehouse
when sights of smoke and smell of a burning material was perceived.
“When
I saw the smoke I started shouting ‘fire’ and I alerted my co-workers. We all panicked.
We were all confused. After some minutes the whole place began to burn. I
cried. It was just like a movie. I don’t know how the fire started and I cannot
even imagine it” the female staff said.
The GM
of Henry& Henry LTD (name withheld) said he cannot say anything now and all
he needs was for the fire to be put out first so they can ascertain the damage,
and root cause of the fire. The CEO of the Company arrived at the warehouse
after an hour the fire started. With a folded arm he watched the warehouse burn
and with a deep sigh, he entered his vehicle and drove off.
About
NGN5BN worth of goods and properties were reported to have been lost in the
completely wrecked company warehouse.
Terrified
Residents living close to the warehouse already packed up their belongings and
documents then headed for a safe spot and children were seen with their parents
running for their lives. There was no loss of life in the fire incident.
“Sighting
two major recent fire incidents in the span of four days In Kirikiri town
community, In the eventual case when any of the seven oil depot tank farms goes
ablaze, there might be little or nothing done to contain the catastrophe as the
entire oil depot fire service team are not well trained in the art of firefighting.
I think this year should be termed REVELATION 2015” A top safety official
disclosed to Kirikiri News.
