I SEE A BIG CLOUD HANGING OVER NIGERIA – ELDER STATESMAN MBAZULIKE AMAECHI (PART 3)

Looking at the structure of the South east and other considerations, which area do you think the new state should come from?
From Enugu area, Nsukka people are saying they want Adada state or something like that. Imo State wants to carve out a state from Orlu/Uguta area to merge with one or two local government areas of Anambra State.
But there is the one they call Equity state. It embraces all the five states. It takes something from Ebonyi, Enugu, Anambra, Imo and Abia. It is around Okigwe area. I think that by way of compromise that would be a desirable or suitable arrangement. But whatever that happens, I think when they come back, Ndigbo will have to meet and I do hope that Ohanaeze will have the spine to force a truce and make it a reality this time. In our time, during the era of Igbo state union, if a situation like this arose, we forgot sectional, political and personal interests and then agreed on what was best for Ndigbo. I do hope that we should get to that stage and that apart from Ohanaeze, it’s leadership being able to co-ordinate that, I do hope that the governors will give peace a chance, because the problem we seem to have around here are the governors. The governors have their own states alright to run; they are given money to run their own states. But they must always consider the general overall interest of Ndigbo and forget personal small empires and their own interests. However, when they come back from the conference, and when it reaches the stage of implementation, I hope Ndigbo will meet.
You mentioned about three key areas jostling to clinch the additional state. But from your own personal assessment, which of them ranks highest?

Left with me, the area that touches all the states; Ebonyi, Enugu, Abia, Imo and Anambra appears to be a more acceptable compromise. To me it is central.
If there is no agreement or consensus on where the state should come from, what do you suggest should happen? Should the Federal Government or the conference embargo it?

Certainly not! No. There must be an agreement. There must be an agreement. Where there is no common agreement, there are other democratic ways of finding what the majority decision is. There could be some general survey to find out the choice of the people. But I do hope we will not get to that stage.
