“Never

boy back here immediately!” Olofin ordered “Hurry now,” he added, eager to save
his sons life.
“Omo
Esu. Omo Esu o,” the messengers shouted to Esu’s when they reached the
farm. “You are wanted in the house
urgently,” they informed, when he answered.
“What
am I wanted for?” Esu’s son inquired.
“Just
come, they need you at once!” was all he could get out of them.
When
they reached the entrance to Olofin’s house, and when Esu’s son saw all the
Babalawo assembled there, he knew that the reason for this summon was a serious
one. Then he burst into a chant,
“My
revered elders, I salute you all respectfully! Ifa warns that if a person comes
to you for help you should give him the help freely. You may be safeguarding
your life that way… Orunmila had no money to consult if. He went to my father, Esu
to ask for help. My father admitted that he too was broke. So, they came to Olofin
to borrow the money needed. Olofin insisted on taking an Iwofa and a guarantor
before he loaned Orunmila the money. I Esu’s son was handed over as the Iwofa. My father, Esu, stood guarantor for that loan.
I was put on Olofin’s farm to work. There I am to remain until the loan is
repaid in full. This is the condition Olofin stipulated.”
With
this, Esu’s son hit the head of the hoe on the ground and Olofin’s son
convulsed violently.
“Please
