Kirikiri town is a
habitat of talented people. Talents in writing, singing, comedy, choreography,
and most importantly sports. More than half of the 28,875 people who reside in Kirikiri
town are involved in one sporting activity or the other. Sports such as:
football, volleyball, basketball, rugby,
martial arts and athletics. Sprinting,
shot-put, javelin, jugging are amid some of the track and field events doings performed
on the Prison stadium.
These sporting
activities are made possible by the Nigerian Prison Service. They have an
immense stadium where any form of exercise and sporting bustle could be
achieved. Initially, during conception of the Nigerian Prison Service barracks,
the stadium was to be strictly used by prison officers for training purposes,
but as time passed by, things changed with it.
The volleyball court
is leftward just some meters beside the football goal post, the basketball
court is starboard some meters after the track while the football field is
located at the center. Apart from the field in the stadium, there is also a
second-rate football field located inside the barracks.
These exceptional and advantageous
provisions made by the Prisons however, contributed to the cultivation and
unearthing of several talented individuals, not only that, it provoked the
morale of the youth’s and aged as well to be good at sports. It attracted
residents and enabled them perform some exercise to develop their individual
talent. Many people inundate from Navy town, Mazamaza, mile 2, Festac, Apapa to
drill their physiques in Kirikiri town.
When there is a
platform, talents are unveiled. Before the 1980’s, sports have developed in
Kirikiri town most especially football. Other sports followed suite. Football
has always preceded all other sports in Kirikiri town. It has gained more
popularity because many youths tend to love football more than other available
sports.
From 1993 till
present, football in Kirikiri town became recognized in Lagos State. Several competitions
and tournaments that have been organized by Lagos state were won by clubs of Kirikiri
town and many national and international stars have been born out of clubs in
Kirikiri town.
Other sport such as
volley ball and basketball subsists as there is a wannabe team.
When the Prison Stadium
aka Kirikiri Stadium was visited, just as expected, more than 200 people were
found performing one fitness activity or the other at the stadium. Many were jugging
with their headphones on, while some were playing football, others were on the pavilion
performing aerobics, some played volleyball and basketball while some others sat
down observing.
The most interesting aspect
was the taekwondo greenhorns. These compromised of zealous children from the
age of 4-12. These champs unquestionably understand what they are doing. The practiced
like mature people. Many of them are white belters, about 4 are yellow belters.
A red belter was seen among them. It was an amazing sight.
Others were boxing
training sessions, where sets of young boys practiced like there was fight the
next day. The men and women at the pavilion danced to numerous tracks as the
exercised systematically mostly by shaking, twisting and bending their midriff behaviorally.
It was a sight to behold as it was quite entertaining.
Every Saturday residents
materialize to keep fit at the stadium. This happens to be a weekly cycle and
only daily to the professionals. Make it a date.
