Mr. Jibowu Omoleye. A sailor and one of the associate managers in Juliana Hotel.
The Juliana hotel management has said
that they did not block the drainage channel that causes the yearly flood on Johnson
Street during heavy rainfall and neither did the Nigerian Port Authority
management.
“We did not block the gutter neither
did the NPA. Actually we also share the same flood predicament as everyone on
this street. Whenever it rains, the entire hotel premises are also consumed
with water. If you take a look at the back, (pointing to the wall at the
extreme end of the premises), you will see an opening, this is where the water
flows out into the gutter inside the NPA terminal. The people at the beginning
of the street pour all sorts of dirt into the gutter and it wanders with the
water to block the drainage way. Whenever it is blocked either way by nylons
and debris, there must be flood because the water cannot flow through. It is
just so unfortunate” a sailor and one of the associate managers of the hotel Mr. Jibowu
Omoloye said.

However, Kirikiri news, in an analytical
survey gathered that the ever stagnant imagination hovering in the minds of the
residents on Johnson street that water flows through the drainage way from
Johnson to the Kirikiri canal was and is just a figment of imagination; a
complete white lie.
It was discovered that the main gutter channel
extending from Cardoso Street comes to a halt at the Juliana Hotel fence. In a
bid to make sure that accumulated water in the ever sand jam-packed gutter
flows away, a nexus gutter was dug by the former hotel management to pass through
the hotel premises. This was considered their greatest mistake ever. However, a
small circular hole was created in the fence bordering the hotel and the
Nigerian Port Authority terminal to connect the gutter inside the terminal in a
ridiculous assumption that it flows into the Kirikiri canal.

However, during the survey, it was also
discovered that the Kirikiri canal is about 500 meters north to where the gutter
is situated inside the terminal and the gutter where the water is so they say
to pour into, is filled up with sand. It is also dry at the extreme end to the
right and left. On the right, the gutter leads to the end of the fence to the
west of the terminal while, on the left, the gutter leads to the NPA terminal gate
to the east. The gutter therefore has no linkage to the Kirikiri canal.

Apparently, the landlords on Johnson Street
are careless about this as many of them are not resident in the county while
some of them hand over property authority to lawyers. However, the rest who
live on the street are careless to even chew over the problem swaying in their environment.

The residents who are tenants pray
daily to move into their own houses someday as presently, they are helpless. Their
landlords don’t care. The government also claims not to know about it even if
they may have been notified in previous years and now.

Nevertheless, this year’s rainy season
might have come to an end with feather-light rainfall but next year will
definitely be worse if adequate measures aren’t shouldered by relevant authorities.
